Mitosis is when cells multiply, which is how you grow. Before mitosis can begin, your DNA replicates then compresses into four sister chromatids. Each pair of sister chromatids were one chomosome that was seperated and compressed. Your cell will also replicate its one centrosome into two centrosomes. The prophase is the first part of mitosis. The second part of mitosis is the metaphase. The anaphase is the third part of mitosis. The fourth and final part of mitosis is the telophase. During the prophase, the nuclear membrane disintegrates, the two centrosomes move to opposite sides of the cell, and each pair of sister chromatids are connected by a centromere. During the metaphase, the two centrosomes make small tubes that connenct to the two centromeres on the two pairs of sister chromatids. During the anaphase, the two centrosomes pull the two centromeres and the whole cell apart, making the two pairs of sister chromatids into four seperate chromosomes. During the telophase, the cell fully divides into two cells and each pair of chromosomes attach to make a whole set of DNA. In the picture below, the cell has finished replicating its one chromosome and is now beginning to compress it's DNA into two pairs of sister chromatids.
