To calculate the area of a hollow polygon, you need to calculate the area of shape as if it wasn't hollow. Then, you need to calculate the area of the shape inside the bigger shape. Once you know the area of the outside shape the area of the one inside, take away the area of the smaller shape from the area of the bigger shape.
