Mother Teresa's Story

Where did she go to school?
Mother Teresa, given the name Agnes Bojaxhiu at birth, went to a school run by a Covent; A group of people that are monks, nuns, or friars. She sang in the local Sacred Heart choir and sometimes was asked to sing solos.

How did she become a nun?
In 1928, at the age of 18, she decided to be a nun and went to Dublin, Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto. That is where got the name Sister Mary Teresa after Saint Therese of Lisieux. In 1931, she went to Darjeeling in India. She then made her First Profession of Vows in May 1931.

I heard she was a teacher.
Yes, she was. After making her First Profession of Vows, she was sent to Calcutta to be a teacher in Saint Mary's High School for Girls. It was a school run by the Sisters of Loreto and was a school that taught from the poorest families of the city of Bengali. It was there that Sister Teresa also learned to speak Hindi and Bengali while she taught History and Geography. She also dedicated herself to easing the destitution of the girls' through education.

How did she become Mother Teresa?
On May 24, 1937, she had her Final Profession of Vows to a life chastity, obedience, and poverty. According to the customs of for Loreto nuns, she got title of Mother Teresa as of making her final vows. Mother Teresa still kept teaching at Saint Mary's High School and became the principal in 1944. Through her generosity, kindness, and commitment to the education of her students, Mother Teresa sought to bring them to a life of devotion to Christ. She wrote in prayer, "Give me the strength to be ever the light of their lives, so that I may at last to you."
