Our assignment was to memorize, then write a poem, then write about how we understood it.
"Hey, diddle diddle.
The cat and the fiddle.
The cow jumped over the moon.
The little dog laughed to see such sport.
And the dish ran away with the spoon."
From what I understand, I guess "diddle diddle" was used to refer to someone. Probably the child.
The cat is probably a metaphor since composers and cats seem to have some sort of elegance.
(Except those cats in those fail videos)
I think the cow "jumping over the moon" is an optical illusion. The cow jumped, and the dog thought that jumped over the moon.
It's a similar thing that people do when take a picture and look like they're holding a landmark; such as the Eiffel Tower.
And I'm pretty sure the dog was laughing in amazement on watching such an athletic cow.
(Can a cow even jump at all?)
I'm pretty sure though that the dish running away with the spoon is a lesson.
You know, about love being best if the parents are watching? I think? I dunno. I'm single XD
