When air is cold (Like if the air conditioner is on), it becomes dryer. That dry air allows static charges to be created. Last night, a pillow rubbed on my 1-inch long hair, and created a strong static charge. A charge strong enough to travel 2 inches from the pillow to the tip of my finger. The charge was weak enough to not hurt my finger, but strong enough to travel 2 inches in the air and sting my tongue (It was a bad idea to try that).
Ha ha, that's one lesson you won't easily forget.
