Exponents are repeated multiplication. Multiplication is repeated addition. So, 3^4 is 3 * 3 * 3 * 3. So, 3^4 is 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 81. Wow, that was tiring to write down.
