Artificial intelligence is the code applied on a non-player character and/or an inactive player that makes them act based on certain criteria. Sometimes, NPCs will act similarly since they share the same AI. This article will describe how that works and show you some examples on how this is applied in real games.
(Warning! LOTS of Undertale spoilers!)
A game loop is when a player creates input using their controls, then the game updates its state, then renders it so the player can see their actions. An agent AI model is when an NPC follows these three steps that are similar to a game loop. Those steps are Sense, Think, and Act.
Sense is when the NPC will detect the current state of certain objects, the game environment, or even the player's stats. In Undertale for example, Sans will detect the state of other NPCs to check if their state remains "alive" when you meet him in the corridor. He can also check your stats to see what's your LV (Level of violence) and EXP (Execution points).
Think is when an NPC decides how to act based on what it knows from the Sense step. The possible ways it can decide to act can depend on random factors and the current state of the game based on the player's actions. In Undertale, if all NPCs that can be encountered before the corridor are dead, Sans will decide to fight you (With him being the final instead of Asgore)!
After the NPC has detected state of the game through Sense, and has decided what to do with Think, the NPC can then Act based on that information.
In other games, they usually REWARD you for murdering every entity in the game. But in Undertale (MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!), Sans will punish you for killing everyone (Including his brother) by giving you the hardest boss fight possible.
And if you kill him and continue to progress (STOP READING! BIG SPOILER!), you will end up with the game being in an endless black screen until you decide to sell your character's soul to #####. After losing your soul to #####, the game will reset, but you will end up having (WHY ARE YOU STILL READING?! HUGE SPOILER!) ##### ruin all of your endings for the rest of the game.
According to the Steam Community, the effects of a post-genocide run will remain on both that computer and your Steam account. Yep, lesson learned, NEVER deliberately search for innocent NPCs just to kill them to get stronger if the game depends on your decisions.
(I warned you. This spoiler is as big as m- nevermind)
