Who is Stephen Hawking?
Stephen Hawking was a British cosmologist, teach, and author. He was born on January 8, 1942; which is also the three-hundredth death anniversary of Galileo Galilei. He was a very famous scientist who deeply thought about the cosmos. He was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 21; ALS is when the nerves that allow voluntary muscles to move die.
What happened when he got ALS?
When he was diagnosed with ALS, the doctors estimate him to have 2 and a half years left to live. He first noticed his symptoms while he was at Oxford University. He would fall over and sometimes have trouble speaking during speeches. When his father noticed his problems, Stephen Hawking was taken to the hospital and went under some tests. While he shared a room with another patient with leukemia, he realized that his condition wasn't as bad as his.
What made him do those great things?
After leaving the hospital, he had a dream involving execution. Thinking he had only 2 and a half years left, he decided to study and research.
Why is he in that wheelchair?
In 1969, Hawking had almost completely lost control of his body and had to use a wheelchair. In the 1970s, his family asked one of the students to help care for him. Fortunately, he was still able to feed himself. In 1985, he had permanently lost his voice and needed tracheotomy; tracheotomy is surgery in the windpipe in order to remove some sort of obstruction.
How did he communicate?
Upon losing his voice, and computer programmer for California made a program that speak words based on eye and head movement. When the machine was introduced, he still had control of his hand, allowing him to also select words using handheld input. Once he lost all control of his body, he then had to control the program through a sensor on his cheek muscle.
How did Stephen Hawking change the world?
Stephen Hawking was a theoretical physicist. His research shows that black holes were simply more than just vacuums in space and that matter in the form of radiation can escape the gravitational pull of a black hole. He had many theories such as imaginary time and hawking radiation. According to Stephen Hawking, by applying a Euclidean approach to quantum gravity, which makes imaginary time replace real time, the universe's history becomes similar to a 4-dimensional curved-surface without a boundary.
How did he die?
On March 14, 2018 (Yesterday), he died because of ALS. It was estimated that it should have killed him about 50 years ago. On Twitter, theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss tweeted, "A start went out in the cosmos. Stephen Hawking fought and tamed the bravely for 76 years and taught us all something important about what it truly means to celebrate about being human."
